Replacement top for Hay Design low table

After buying this ‘rebar style’ metal base for a coffee table by modern Danish furniture brand Hay Design, the customer needed to add a top. The original glass surface had been broken but the base was still intact.

We discussed various options and the customer decided to go for a birch plywood top with an American black walnut veneer. We veneered the ply by hand using wood glue and a traditional style manual press.

The veneer was trimmed and the whole top sanded to a fine finish, before being treated with a clear hardwax oil to protect the surface from liquids, and bring out the warm tone of the walnut.
