Commissioned by a local community organisation in North London, this project involved creating a set of park benches using railway sleepers, designed to be robust, practical and well suited to an outdoor setting.
New sleepers were used rather than reclaimed, ensuring the timber was free from the chemical treatments often found in older materials, making them a safer choice for public use. An environmentally friendly, water-based preservative was carefully selected and applied, providing protection from the elements while aligning with the project’s sustainability requirements.
For added stability and to meet health and safety considerations, each bench was fitted with custom-made steel support plates fixed to the base of the legs, helping to anchor the structure securely and ensure long-term durability in a public space.
