What Timber Options Can I Choose for My Desktronic Desk Top?

Tablemaker specialises in made-to-order desk tops, and the materials we use reflect that quality. Whether you want something bold and expressive or clean and contemporary, our selection of real hardwoods (subject to supplier availability) ensures your top is as unique as the space it lives in. Each real wood table top for desk is hand-finished in our London workshop:

  • Oak – Our go-to choice — classic, strong, and full of natural charm. Perfect for home offices, studios, and anyone looking for a desk that will age beautifully.

  • Walnut – Deep brown tones with rich grain movement. A standout option for premium setups, from creative environments to executive spaces.

  • Ash – Sleek, pale, and distinctly modern. Ash suits minimalist and Nordic-inspired interiors where a lighter touch is key.

  • Beech – Smooth and consistent in tone, beech works brilliantly for multi-user desks, open plan offices, or any space where function meets form.

  • Pine – Our most budget-friendly timber. Softwood with character, ideal for light home office use or casual working setups.

What Thickness Options Can I Choose?

We offer a range of thicknesses to suit different setups, preferences, and workspace demands — all engineered to work seamlessly with Desktronic frames. Whether you’re designing a sleek writing station or a heavy-duty workstation with multiple monitors, we build every desk top with structural integrity, stability, and long-term performance in mind, regardless of the thickness you choose.

  • 19mm
Sleek, lighter-weight, and ideal for compact home offices or minimalist workspaces where a slim profile is preferred.
  • 24mm
A well-balanced choice that offers dependable strength without excessive bulk — our most commonly requested thickness.
  • 30mm
For a bold, ultra-sturdy look and feel. This option is ideal for supporting monitor arms, large screens, or when you want your desktop to feel heavy, grounded, and built to endure.

What Edge Profiles Are Available?

Edge detailing plays a big role in both the aesthetics and comfort of your desk. Every custom edge profile desk top we build is shaped by hand in our London workshop, giving you total control over the final look and feel.

  • Square
Crisp and modern — a clean-cut option that suits contemporary and minimalist spaces.
  • Rounded
Soft curves on the edges add comfort, especially for arms and elbows during long work sessions.
  • Chamfered
A sharp, angled cut that adds definition and a touch of refinement to your desk top.
  • Bullnose
A smooth, fully rounded edge that feels warm and traditional — ideal for classic interiors or family-friendly setups.
  • Bevelled
Stylish undercut angle for a distinctly Scandi look.
  • Bespoke
Need something different? We can create custom contours, cut-outs, or bevels to match your workspace, accessories, or personal style.

What Finishes Are Available?

Every hardwood desktop oil finished by Tablemaker is treated with care to highlight the natural grain and ensure long-term durability.

The finish you choose doesn’t just affect how your desk top looks — it also shapes how it feels to the touch, how it wears over time, and how it stands up to daily tasks, spills, and equipment use. We offer three high-quality finishes, each suited to different styles and working needs.

Hard Wax Oil
Our most popular finish, combining a smooth satin sheen with excellent resistance to spills, scratches, and wear — perfect for regular use in home or creative offices.

Varnish
Adds a stronger top layer that’s easy to clean and suited to high-traffic desks or shared workspaces — ideal for commercial settings and low-maintenance routines.

How Does Installation Work?

Every Tablemaker desk top is delivered undrilled, giving you total flexibility during setup. Whether you’re fitting it to a HomeOne, HomePro or custom frame, this approach ensures the best alignment for your specific base.

Our made to measure desk tops are precision-cut to size, sealed, and ready to install. Simply mark your fixings and drill during assembly — or have your installer do it. The result? A clean, secure fit with a flush, built-in feel that’s tailored to your frame, not forced onto it.

Questions Customers Ask Us Before Purchasing

If you have a question of your own, then please ask.

Yes — we can accommodate most non-standard frame shapes, including curved or recessed brackets. Just send us your frame model or a photo of your setup, and we’ll guide you on sizing or create a top with custom shaping if needed.

Absolutely. We build to order, so if you need extra workspace, deeper tops, or custom widths, we can scale accordingly. Many clients choose to go beyond standard 160×80 to suit dual monitors or studio setups.

No problem — we offer sample packs with solid wood swatches so you can see the colour, grain and finish in person. We’re also happy to advise based on your space, lighting and frame style.

Desktronic frames are designed to lift heavy loads, and our desk tops are well within those limits. If you’re pairing with large monitor arms or studio equipment, we recommend the 28–32mm thickness for extra stability.

If you’re choosing an undrilled top, you’ll need a drill, driver and screws. For pre-drilled tops, installation is straightforward with a screwdriver. We’re happy to supply guidance for either route, or coordinate with your installer.

We can stain or finish your top to complement existing furniture — just let us know what you’re trying to match. We’ve worked with interior designers and workspace planners on colour-matching projects before.

For most users, 25–28mm offers the best blend of comfort, appearance, and strength. If you prefer a chunkier look or use heavy equipment, go for 30mm+. Lighter setups in smaller rooms may benefit from 22mm or less.

Yes — we supply trade orders UK-wide, and offer multi-item discounts. We also coordinate deliveries to multiple locations if needed. Get in touch with your requirements and we’ll quote accordingly.
