Hardwax oil keeps care simple
Hardwax oil is our standard finish for tables and table tops. In the Tablemaker workshop, we use it because dining tables face food, drink and normal cleaning, and the finish is made for that kind of use.
We apply a minimum of two coats of hardwax oil to tables and table tops as standard. For cleaning, mild detergent such as soapy water is the right everyday approach for hardwax oil or varnished table tops.
Straightening bars help control movement
Straightening bars are fitted across the grain to help control cupping, which is the tendency of a timber top to curve across its width. On the pictured ATO 55, those bars are oak, so the support detail stays part of the timber build.
You do not need workshop language to judge the point. A simple oak table still needs the right structure under the surface.
